The danger of sounding the opposite gender in a blind audition is that the judges may mistakenly see you as within the normal vocal range of that gender, thus not turning around for you.

@Ensorcelledsee_Inamorata intersex is a hormonal thing, not a genitalia thing. That being said, genitalia is a hormonal thing. So really, man and woman are just two sides on the spectrum of high estrogen or testosterone, while intersex people are somewhere closer to the middle of the spectrum. Genitalia really has nothing to do with being intersex, even though it’d make it more easy to spot, it is really just a word to describe someone with somewhat equal amounts of testosterone and estrogen.

Me too. I think sometimes they are waiting for a big power note and it doesn't come. It's almost like when the singer finishes and they are all turned around they focus on what the person looks like as well as singing.
@Peggy Tan When a woman sings with a woman's voice it might be OK, 8 of 10, Great but not what I'm looking for,etc etc. However when a woman sings with a man's voice their potential jumps several points higher. This is simply because their vocal range and voice type gives them a clear advantage.
You have to remember that the Voice judges aren't there to simply to find 'The Best' but to find hidden gems they can polish and make shine most beautifully. They are there as vocal trainers after all.
To all those confused on the first clip,
Point 1: That's a crucial moment where the judges have already or nearly full slot and are looking for those quality voices.
Point 2: It's not about the gender nor the genre of the music.
Point 3: One of the judges is or somewhat well versed with opera and of course all of them have knowledge on it.
The main point is, he needed more voice control. Shifting from head voice to chest voice without a flow or medium that blends them together sounds creaky. The tones were not on point rendering the quality of the music. He needs to practice more. Peace, no keyboard wars.
@Kymmberliestarr try singing it yourself, then you will know why his effort is remarkable and maybe be a bit less critical considering the difficulty of this piece for a male vocalist, let alone a female.

1. If they have almost full slots they still could turn for respect or taken him in as he is clearly better than them at it.
2. The genre definitely matters most judges don't respect or understand opera metal and other genres.
3. No they don't.
4. Neither was his bridge "creaky" Nor was his tone bad, his larynx was well positioned and this was his natural timbre. And it's a soprano falsettone not head voice. Maybe he was off pitch on a very few notes but he is singing queen of the night! Let's see the judges do it better!

Some of them sing the songs better than those who originally sang them. Like the rap songs

Got all the feels from that performance. Goosebumps. But I kinda think they were even more surprised to see a little white male kid standing there. He did MJ proud.
Summertime Sadness guy was awesome. I love when he vibrates his falsetto. Also the guy that was singing At Last wowsers what a great voice. Glad they didn't keep zoomed in right in his face and tried to cover it up. That's classy.

The Queen of the Night arias from the Magic Flute are some of the toughest songs to sing for a soprano (specifically, a coloratura soprano). It’s really phenomenal for a man to attempt this. I agree with the comment that gender is irrelevant re: truly magnificent voice. It actually shows a greater range & skillset to perform repertoire written for the opposite gender. Great stuff! 💕

When I was younger I used to also be talented with that kind of high voice,
but then puberty hit and then I switched suddenly to baritone.
That conversion from high to low in my voice really made me sad, but I'm glad that there are still kids like you who still have the gift.

For the most part, when you listen closely, certain instances of the voices give it away due to the respective male or female. Tho I will be honest, the second guy made me second guess myself for a second at the end

"I'll be there" was a totally mindblowing performance.that performance melt my heart.
Hollly cow, the girl singing “take me to church “ she has such control of her voice , so soft yet strong and then those powerful raspy notes!!! Damn! People all over have such beautiful God given talent and we never hear of them !
1st: As a person trained in counter-tenor opera I could tell that it was a male.
2nd: Same method as the first one but on the lower range.
3rd: Some parts where really hard here honestly but when he went to the lower range I could tell.
4th: It wasn't until the belting in the chorus I could tell that it was a male.
5th: I couldn't tell that it was a female. She was amazing.
6th: Because of the 5th person it became a bit easier to tell that it was a female. Some part of her higher notes gave it away for me.
7th: Really good performance. When she sang quietly it wasn't as growl-y as a male voice generally is.
8th: I honestly thought it was a female.
9th: That was smooth as heck. Couldn't tell at all.
10th: Really well done. Using the lower-register makes her sound a bit boyish.

I really enjoyed this video. As I watched I was thinking these auditions are amazing. To think English is not their first language and they sang so beautifully. The man that sang "At Last" gave me chills he was so good. The boy who sang "I'll Be There" version was better than the original. ❤
I did get very nervous for them because the judges sure like to keep the suspense going by waiting until the end 😂

It's Timbre not pitch none of them sound like the opposite sex except the dude who sing party girls don't get hurt. He sound Androgynous between a higher than average male and deeper than average male simultaneously mixed to get a gender neutral tone
the girl singing "Ghost" is not even close to a male voice..its just that she sounds like a 60yo whiskey drinking girl and is in fact in the beginnings of 20...but not close a bit to any male voice

I could pick them all easily, except for the second one. It took me about halfway through the song to hear a "tell" to his voice. And the second last one (the 24 yr old with the long brown hair) was pretty hard to guess too.
You have to hand it to the first performer. The magic flute is bar none the hardest to sing. Sure, it wasn't perfect. But you gotta admire that bravery.

I don't know a lot about opera and even I know how incredible he was. The power in his voice didn't falter at all.
It was amazing and I guessed it was a male straight away but to be far the title of the video may have influenced me.

Apart from one audition I could tell every gender with ease and honestly almost found it rude of the judges to exclaim their shock out loud. I know I'd be embarrassed if I sang on the voice and someone turned around saying omg it's a guy lol

Then againnnnn I had the advantage of knowing genders here are probably not what you'd expect based on the title of the video, still I think the undertone in these singers voices were clearly revealing their gender and didn't require the judges to be so bamboozled and possibly embarrass these singers on stage 😬 Then again maybe I'm being over dramatic here, and if so please forgive me, I just woke up 😅
It's hard to stress your vocals like that. So men that can hit those notes is impressive! And woman that can hit the deep notes is impressive.
Marlo was the only one I really would finish the audition without knowing... All the others eventually made it clear

The first singer is a counter-tenor. His tone is very pure. I hope he becomes recognised in a more professional setting. And, excuse me, but those four judges are utterly piss-ignorant about music and voices outside generic pop 'culture'.

That first dude did not sound good 😂 sounded very strained and not a proper amount of air support, pitch was off, and those staccatos weren't good.
